Like many of you, the beginning of the year for peoplezest is about reflection, growth and priorities. It is a time to look back on last year and review what worked, what didn’t, and how that can intentionally transition into progression for this year. As part of this process, I like to take the time to come up with what my word of the year will be—and this year what spoke to me was a phrase of the year—and I just knew it was perfect for what I wanted to speak into existence for the year!
And now for our words or phrase of the year for 2024… Acts of Service! If you caught our
email last week, I talked about how it is shown here on the farm and how much it speaks to me.
While I loved seeing my donkey doing his job to protect the herd I did feel sorry for that sweet puppy Timber who just froze up with fright. Our more seasoned farm dogs have come to learn to take a very wide berth around the donkeys to avoid them.
We continuously see acts of service between our animals, mostly in the form of grooming or scratching each other. Fun fact for those curious, “scratching” is done with the teeth.
For those not familiar with Love Languages, Dr. Gary Chapman published a book "The Five Love Languages". It was originally written for romantic relationships but has found a place in all relationships, including the workplace. In a professional setting, understanding and incorporating love languages can contribute to a more positive and collaborative work environment.
1. Words of Affirmation
Providing positive feedback and praise for a job well done.
Encouraging and acknowledging the efforts of colleagues.
Using affirming language in communication.
2. Acts of Service
Helping a colleague with their workload or tasks.
Offering support during busy times or challenging projects.
Demonstrating a willingness to contribute to the team's success.
3. Receiving Gifts
Recognizing achievements with tangible tokens of appreciation, such as gift cards, awards, or small presents.
Celebrating milestones and accomplishments with symbolic gifts.
4. Quality Time
Promoting team-building activities and fostering a sense of camaraderie.
Encouraging open communication and actively listening to colleagues.
Valuing face-to-face interactions and team meetings.
5. Physical Touch
In a professional context, this can be translated into appropriate physical gestures like handshakes, fist bumps, or pats on the back to express encouragement.
Creating a friendly and inclusive environment that promotes a sense of belonging.
If you are looking for a fun team building exercise at your 2024 kick-off meetings this year, this would be something great to incorporate! Talk about the 5 love languages within the workplace and let your team decide which one speaks to them personally. Then you can incorporate a style all year long that fosters intentional and individualized work relationships.
We hope the beginning of your 2024 has pointed in the direction that is right for you. Peoplezest looks forward to continuing to work with you through executive placements, strategizing services, career counseling and resume needs.
